Who Is Cheryl Mabika

Cheryl Mabika is the Head Ecologist for Save Valley Conservancy


What inspires her to do her job ?

Question : What inspires you to continue pursuing the conservation career ?

Answer : I am inspired by many different remarkable women who have made a mark at different times in my life starting with my mum. My motivation is to be able to make a mark in the conservation of wildlife and other natural resources with emphasis on community beneficiation. It is my hope that one day we will have communities that bear the brunt of living with wildlife getting reciprocal benefits without having to fight for them.



Most exciting experiences

Question : What are the most exciting experiences in your career so far ?

Answer: I am most likely excited when I am in the field conversing with native communities on solutions to HWC and also conservation in general. There is a wealth of knowledge in the indigenous communities that can be harnessed to improve the way we conserve



Challenges faced by women in conservation

Question: What are the major challenges being faced by women in conservation

Answer : The biggest challenges faced by myself and other women in conservation include balancing family life and work life. A lot of time is required in the field hence it becomes difficult to compete with male counterparts who have less home responsibility

Advice to aspiring conservationists

Question: What advice would you like to give to young women who are aspiring to take conservation as a career ?

Answer: My advice to aspiring conservationists is to ensure that they focus on their goals, have fun let the sun shine on you conservation is a calling

Favorite Animal

Question: What is your favorite animal ?

Answer: My favorite animal is an Eland .
