WHO IS ROSELINE?
Roseline is the Chief Ecologist for Zimbabwe’s wildlife authority responsible for the conservation and management of Terrestrial Ecosystems. She works with a great team of Ecologists, support staff, and external researchers who do research and monitoring inside and outside Protected Areas. Apart from her work life, Roseline is from the Mandisodza family and married into the Chikerema family.
Question: Who is your inspiration and what motivates you to do this job?
Answer: I am inspired by my family. I am motivated by the need to speak for wildlife
Question: How do you balance work and social life?
Answer: Is there such a thing as balancing work and social life?
I do want needs to be time at that moment at a time and of course, my family always comes first.
Question: What are the most exciting and most challenging experiences of your work?
Answer: The most exciting time for me is when I am in the field seeing wildlife. The most challenging parts of my job is not being heard when discussing issues of wildlife conservation and management.
Question: What are the challenges being faced by women in conservation and what can be done to address them?
Answer: I think the major challenge being faced by women in conservation is working twice or thrice as our male counterparts to prove that we can do the job. In my experience, if you are a woman for any field-related work, a man is given priority. I am not sure if it’s just a priority or by design.
Question: Advice to aspiring conservationists
Answer: We are the authors of our own destinies. We need to push for what is right for our wildlife for the sake of our children and children’s children.
Question: Do you think a mentorship program can be a good tool to motivate more young women to take up conservation as a career?
Answer: We certainly need good mentorship programs to motivate more women to take up conservation as a career and also create spaces for them to perform and flourish.
Question: Would you take up some time to mentor a young person given an opportunity?
Answer: Yes given an opportunity I would continue to mentor the young in conservation.
